Ian Wright Suggests Man City Starboy Should Leave the Club to Rediscover his Love for the Game

In a recent episode of The Overlap's Stick to Football podcast, Arsenal legend Ian Wright expressed concerns about Phil Foden's current situation at Manchester City, suggesting that the 25-year-old midfielder might need to leave the club to regain his love for the game.

Phil Foden’s Career at a Crossroads

Phil Foden has achieved extraordinary success with Manchester City, securing every major domestic trophy, including multiple Premier League titles and the FA Cup. However, despite his accolades, Wright believes Foden is struggling to find joy in football. “When I hear him say that he’s got to find the joy, he’s 25, and he’s won everything that the domestic game has got to offer,” Wright said. “He’s at a place now where his club’s transitioning.”

The 2024-25 season has been tough for Foden. After being named PFA Player of the Year in 2024, he has struggled, scoring only 13 goals in 49 appearances and playing just 15 minutes this campaign due to an ankle injury and increased competition for places. Manchester City’s slow start, with only one win in their first three Premier League matches, adds to the complexity of Foden’s situation.

Pressures and Transition at Manchester City

Ian Wright highlighted the pressures Foden faces, including criticism of his England performances and challenges securing a regular spot in City’s squad amid the integration of new players.

“People are constantly questioning his England performances, and he’s sitting there with everything and nothing,” Wright noted. He suggested that Foden’s long tenure under Pep Guardiola’s intense management might be contributing to mental fatigue: “Phil’s been with Pep for the whole time, that might be a bit tiring, he might need to move. It’s a tough one.”

Wright described Foden as being at a crossroads, grappling with introspective questions: “It’s in his head now, ‘Can I go again? Can I find the joy? Why did I play in the first place?’” He hopes this is merely a temporary dip, warning that “people will judge him” based on how he navigates this period.

Drawing parallels to Cole Palmer, who left Manchester City for Chelsea and flourished, Wright suggested a change of scenery could benefit Foden.

What’s Next for Phil Foden?

As Manchester City prepares for key fixtures, including a derby against Manchester United, Foden’s fitness and role remain uncertain. Whether he stays to reclaim his place or seeks a fresh start elsewhere, his next steps will be crucial in reigniting his passion and shaping his legacy.

Wright emphasized personal responsibility, stating, “It’s got to be onto themselves.” The spotlight is on Foden to navigate this defining moment and rediscover the spark that made him one of England’s brightest talents.
