Match Review: Everton vs Aston Villa

Aston Villa managed to hold on to a 0-0 draw against Everton, who will be disappointed they only walked away with one point. The Toffees had some great chances to take the lead, but Emiliano Martínez put in a fine performance to keep the game level. Despite his transfer saga, he certainly proved his worth to the Villa supporters and may have already made up for his behaviour.

Everton Performance

Everton started the game well, controlling possession and coming close on a number of occasions. Beto had a chance in the opening minutes that he should have put away, but missed the target. Jack Grealish then had an effort saved by Martínez, after a block from Tyrone Mings landed in the path of the ex-Villa man.

Momentum started to pick up for Everton as their high press was causing Villa problems. Michael Keane headed over the bar from a corner in the 33rd minute, before Youri Tielemans came close to scoring on own-goal just before half-time.

At the start of the second-half, Beto had another chance to take the lead, but he didn't manage to get a touch from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's cross. New signing Merlin Röhl came on for his debut in the 66th minute. Their best chance of the game, was in the 71st minute when a header from Keane was superbly tipped over the bar from Martínez.

The final chance of the game, fell to Keane again, whose header in the 90th minute was wide of the post. David Moyes will feel that Villa were there for the taking, but his side couldn't take their chances. They had twenty shots with only two on target. It was a missed opportunity to take the three points.

Aston Villa Performance

Villa were put under immediate pressure by Everton and started on the back foot. They slowly grew into the game, but yet again they failed to pose an attacking threat. Emiliano Buendía was Villa's brightest spark, with a tweak in tactical setup enabling the Argentinian to pop up in spaces behind Everton's midfield. Towards the end of the second half Villa had frequent spells with the ball, but the majority was around the halfway line.

It was in the 50th minute that Villa started to move the ball with more purpose, which they have yet to do this season. Their closest chance came when Buendía's 20-yard effort deflected off James Tarkowski and looped narrowly wide of the post.

Harvey Elliott and Victor Lindelöf came on for their debuts, however, Youri Tielemans looked like he had picked up an injury. Morgan Rogers had another poor game with the 23-year-old unable to replicate the performance he showed on England duty. If it wasn't for Martínez then Villa would have lost the game, so Unai Emery will be pleased with a point. Though, they are the only English team in the top seven divisions to not have scored a goal yet this season.

Looking Ahead

For Everton, they will travel to Anfield for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool next weekend. It will be their toughest test so far this season, but one that they will hope that their good start to the campaign continues.

Aston Villa's next game is in the Carabao Cup against Brentford on Tuesday night. It was only three games ago that Villa lost 1-0 to them, but they will be wanting to regain some confidence and finally get a win under their belts.
