Micah Richards Lauds Chelsea Man

Chelsea captain Reece James has received glowing praise from former England defender Micah Richards, who described the right-back as “outstanding” following his performances for the national team during the recent international break. James, who has battled persistent injury setbacks over the past few seasons, appears to be regaining his best form — and Richards believes his resurgence could be pivotal for both club and country.

🏥 Injury Woes and a Long Road Back

James has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines, with recurring injuries hampering his consistency and availability. This season began with another setback for Chelsea’s defence, as Levi Colwill suffered an ACL injury during pre-season. Fortunately, James and other key defenders are now returning to full fitness, offering a much-needed boost to Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Despite his injury history, James remains Chelsea’s undisputed first-choice right-back when fit, ahead of Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong.

🗣️ Micah Richards: “He Was Outstanding”

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Richards was effusive in his praise for James following England’s 5–0 win over Serbia.

“Reece James over the two [England] games, he was outstanding,” Richards said. “Imagine having a fully fit Reece James and a fully fit Trent [Alexander-Arnold] for the World Cup. It can cause you all sorts of damage.”

Richards acknowledged James’ injury struggles but emphasized his growing influence and technical quality.

“He’s slowly getting back to what he was when he was on fire. His delivery — people talk about Trent’s delivery, which is magnificent — but Reece James’ delivery is very good, too. And he can defend.”

🔵 Chelsea’s Captain Back in the Fold

James, a product of Chelsea’s academy, was promoted to the first team in 2019 and has since made 193 appearances for the Blues. That number would be significantly higher if not for his injury record, but his recent performances suggest he’s ready to reclaim his place at the heart of Chelsea’s defence.

Maresca has been cautious with James’ minutes, subbing him in late during Chelsea’s last Premier League match before the break. Gusto has filled in admirably at right-back, giving the manager flexibility as James continues to build match fitness
